3D Scanning
Capture a physical object as digital surface data. Our Newark studio provides 3D scanning for engineering, heritage and design projects across the UK.
Discuss your project
- Start with
- The physical object, photographs and overall size.
- Agree the output
- Surface data for viewing, comparison, printing or CAD work.
- Discuss before capture
- Access, surface condition and critical detail.
Start with the object and its purpose
A scan captures surface geometry. The right approach depends on the size, surface, accessibility and intended use of the object. Equipment includes Artec Leo, Space Spider and Micro scanners, with Artec Studio and Geomagic Design X for downstream work.
A scan is the beginning of a workflow
Explain whether you need a visual record, geometry for comparison, a model for printing or a basis for editable CAD. These are different outputs, and the amount of processing needed can vary.
- Send photographs and approximate dimensions
- Describe fragile, reflective or hard-to-reach areas
- Tell us where the object is and whether it can be brought or sent to Newark
- Agree data requirements and any critical accuracy needs before capture
Engineering capture, digital records and replicas
A collection object may need a textured model for display; a component may need geometry for a redesign. A replica introduces another requirement: a model that can be prepared for fabrication at the chosen scale. Explain the intended use before capture so the processing and handover match the task.
Choose scan data or scan-to-CAD
A scanned mesh follows the captured surface. Scan-to-CAD work uses that data as a reference to reconstruct design geometry. If you need editable features, dimensions or changes to a component, allow for a separate reverse engineering and CAD stage.
Tell us if colour and texture are needed, which software will receive the files and whether you also want geometry prepared for a digital exhibit or 3D printing. Agree the output, scale and critical detail before the object is scanned.
Service questions
Can a scan become an editable CAD model?
It can form the basis of reverse engineering. A scanned mesh and a parametric CAD model are different deliverables; we will scope the conversion work with you.
What accuracy can I expect?
The appropriate capture method and achievable result depend on the object and application. Describe your critical dimensions so we can assess the requirement rather than quote a universal tolerance.
Can I send a part to the Newark studio?
Contact us first with photographs, dimensions and the object’s condition. We can discuss whether sending or bringing it to the studio is practical and agree handling and access before it arrives.
Can you capture colour and texture as well as shape?
Include colour and texture in the brief if the model is for an exhibit, a visual record or online viewing. The capture method, processing and delivery format need to be agreed for that use.
Have a 3d scanning project?
Start with a sketch, photo, part or model. Tell us what you need it to do; we can discuss the next step.
