CAD Design & Modelling

CAD design and 3D modelling from our Newark studio, for projects across the UK. Turn a sketch, drawing or physical part into a model for the next stage.

Include in the brief
Function, critical dimensions and mating parts.

Planning your project

Agree the handover before the first model.

Choose the files around the person or process that will use them next. A presentation model, editable CAD and a manufacturing drawing are different pieces of work.

Prepare your project brief
What you receive
  • A 3D model with the agreed features and level of detail.
  • Drawings, assembly information or manufacturing exports where included in the scope.
  • An agreed review point before the final handover; identify required software and formats at the start.
What shapes the quote
  • The number and complexity of parts, surfaces and assemblies.
  • The quality of the starting drawings, dimensions or reference model.
  • The quantity of drawing sheets, design alternatives and revision stages required.
Before sending files or parts
  • Separate fixed dimensions from features that can change. Include mating parts where a fit matters.
  • Tell us who needs to edit or manufacture from the files. Format examples such as STEP or STL describe different outputs; compatibility is checked with the receiving workflow.
  • Identify the next test or approval the design must support.
Write a useful design brief

From an idea to a usable design

CAD gives a project a shared digital description before it is made. Bring a sketch, dimensions, an existing model or a clear description of the problem. We can discuss the design work needed and how it connects to prototyping or fabrication.

What to include in your brief

Explain what the design must do, where it fits, the features that matter and what is already fixed. Photos with a scale reference, sketches and existing drawings help us ask better questions.

  • Purpose and intended use
  • Critical dimensions and mating parts
  • Existing drawings, models or reference photographs
  • Required output and the next manufacturing step

Agree the deliverable before modelling

A visual model, an editable engineering model and a file prepared for 3D printing serve different needs. Tell us who will use the data next. We will agree the scope, appropriate file format and review stages before work begins.

CAD for prototypes, components and models

A prototype housing, a replacement component and an architectural model ask different things of a design. Explain the assembly, how it will be handled and the decision the model must support. CAD work can then focus on the features that matter rather than detail that adds little to the job.

  • Develop a new concept from sketches and dimensions
  • Revise an existing model for a prototype or assembly
  • Prepare geometry for 3D printing or suitable laser-cut components
  • Use an existing part or scan as a reference for reconstruction

Editable CAD, drawings or a manufacturing export?

An editable CAD model lets a designer work with the geometry. A drawing communicates dimensions and requirements. A mesh used for printing describes the surface, but does not provide the same editing structure. Tell us which software or supplier will receive the files so the handover can be agreed before modelling.

SolidWorks and Geomagic Design X are part of the studio’s software range. Native files, exchange formats, drawings and any required assembly information should be specified in the brief. If the starting point is an existing physical object, see the separate reverse engineering service.

Service questions

Do I need a finished drawing?

You can start with an idea or sketch. Tell us what you have and what you need the design to achieve so we can assess the work.

How is this different from reverse engineering?

CAD design can begin with a new concept. Reverse engineering begins with an existing physical object and develops usable design information from it.

Can you work from an existing CAD file?

Send the file type, software version if known, and a description of the changes. Include a reference drawing or images where dimensions or assembly relationships are important. We will check compatibility before agreeing the work.

Can CAD design and 3D printing be quoted together?

Yes. Explain the purpose of the prototype and whether the design is ready to make. The brief can cover modelling, a review and the proposed printing stage, with the scope agreed before work begins.

Have a CAD project?

Start with a sketch, photo, part or model. Tell us what you need it to do; we can discuss the next step.
